Im new to djing and just got myself a s2,amp and speakers I have a ok collection of music but have realised that I need a lot more music from many different genres and need to expand my collection. So im just looking for some advice on whats best.I have mostly been buying from amazon but am wondering if there is better ways than just buying albums or individual songs.Ive heard rhapsody is good ,they have a monthly subscription but i dont no if you can download music as part of the subscription.
Any advice info?Where do the seasoned pro's get there collections from or is it just a process and part of becoming a dj to build your own collection?

So recently, (As of last weekend) some of my friends pooled their resources and bought me a Traktor Z2 for my wedding gift..

This makes me a super happy girl.. After 15 years of starting to work on my craft, (and probably more than a year away from having touched any mixer) I finally have my first shiny unused mixer. Most of the time I have shit luck, but I am great at picking friends.

Anyway.. I had some questions.. thoughts.. musings.. that I am hoping the techtools denizens could help me out with..

First off, I dig the S2/S4 Magic Prep tool Ean created and I'm hoping to create one for the Z2 So that when get to the monumental amount of prepping I have to do it will go fairly quickly.. What I was wondering was, would it be worth it to just download that mapping and reverse engineer it? I will do that if necessary.. But I would rather just know what needs to be mapped and whether I need to keep any modifier keys in mind.

The other things I am wondering about is Grid points versus Cue Points.. I believe (I'll have to look it up in a manual) we have only 8 combined. So.. Maybe 2 Grid points.. and the rest for cues.. What's confusing me is the best way to combine and or utilize each to their own strengths. and the workflow of keeping them logically numbered.. I have no experience with the ability to use cue points to remix.. So for the foreseeable future I'm going to be working on my EQ'ing and turntablism.. But in the future I would like to not have to regrid everything for Cue points.. I suppose a lot of this is extremely moot.. I don't actually think I will be using cue points for remixing that much.. I've got to whole decks and volume knobs to mash buttons on..

Any thoughts?
TL;DR
What's the best way to divide and set cue/grid points for the most general use?

Hopefully this diverts some of the hate going on in the "tired of DJing" thread...

So I have been Learning to DJ for a little over 6 months now. I really never intended to do this is front of a large crowd or do any giging but the inevitable happened. Some of my friends came over a few nights ago while I was mixing and they heard a few songs that I was doing some simple AB mixing with. My 2 best friends throw a small house party (15-20 people) at least once a week. They want me to come over and start mixing some tunes. They reassured me my mixes sounded good enough for a bunch of drunk Dub guys.... I still dont think so.

Anyways, Since I never intended on playing out I have been happy with my rokit 8s to jam out in the man room at my house. So I hopped online and did a bunch of searching on using the rokit 8s to DJ with. As usual on the internet, 50% of people say its ok and 50% say you are stupid. Im going to be in a basement that is about 60'x 40'. Considering such said party is thrown once a week in a residential area, we like the music to bump but not so much so that that we piss everyone off. This all being said, with what I have read, the 8s should do plenty fine in this size room at this volume level. Just enough to rock the 60x 40 room and loud enough to get some noise resonating up the stairs into the kitchen and family room / rest of the party area.

(Sorry for the long winded paragraphs before the question)

Considering we are all into bass music, would it make sense at all to have a nice sub to go along with the 8s that might be a little over kill for the size of the rokit 8s? I was thinking about purchasing a QSC KW181 sub. If I ever decided to play bigger stuff I really want to get a set of QSC KW181 and a set of QSC k12s. I have heard these a few times at my local shop and at 1 party and really like how they sound.

Would it be COMPLETELY idiotic to run a KW181 with a set of rokit 8s at a very small house party? I can do slightly idiotic just not completely idiotic...

Yes, I know I could Rent some speakers as well. I just cant help think about cranking that sub at home when the wife and kids leave for a few hours. So im not considering it 100% for such said parties.

Thanks in advance guys.

Hi All,

Hi All,

Thanks for reading my thread. I need some help with my VCI-100.

I am using Traktor 2.50 with a Vestax VCI-100 and a Saffire 6 USB soundcard, running on a Apple MacBook Pro 10.7 Lion. I am using the default mapping that comes with Traktor for the VCI-100.

The issue i have is when i push the headphone cue button for deck B and slide the fade to control deck A i can still hear hear deck B in the monitors (speakers), not at full volume, very slightly but none the less its still there. It will go back to normal when i turn off the headphone cue button. i cant work out if its the fader or the cue button.

I have done as much trouble shooting as i can possibly can, i have changed mappings, re-installed drivers for my soundcard, tried cleaning out the fader etc etc. and still it persists. I dont want to buy a new fader incase its not the fader, how do i find this out. Confused!!!

Does anyone have any ideas on what to do. I will be ever more grateful

Mr Fox

looking for some nice and clear sounding headphones, on ear or over ear, doesn't really matter, but they need to be comfortable.
They are going to be used with my iPhone, and not while i'm dj'ing.
I mainly listen to electronic music, like

What I've been looking at:
AiAiAi Tma-1 studio
Sennheiser Momentum
Audio-Technica ATH-M50
Beyerdynamic DT770

Got any headphones which match my criteria? Or do one of these match them?
I haven't got a chance to listen to them and probably won't get a chance in the nearer future.
Would love to hear about their high, mids and lows as well.

I feel that one of the great things about having good feedback from your equipment is being able to do your thing without having to look between it and your laptop. Cdj's have the advantage of displaying track information above the jog wheel. Do you think that having a display strip that was adhesive and layed between the pitch fader and platter of a technics 1200 (there is plenty of space) to display wave forms and track lists would be a way to keep the eyes centered at the job at hand (between the needle and pitch fader) and keep the art form as true to its nature? Such as putting the laptop on a shelf out of site with full focus on the hardware and song selection? I have found that while I'm searching for my next scratch sample in the heat of the moment, I'm looking at the screen while I'm pushing the record around and when I find the sound that I'm looking for, I'm looking at the laptop instead of where the record needs to be in relation to the needle. What are your thoughts?

Just as this guy has figured out how to hack the Xone Db4 to be scratch certified i'm wondering if it is possible to run the Z2 in external mode in Traktor. The advantage of this is that you can route Maschine as an input and this gives you the ability actually assign Maschine to one of the channels so you can EQ and have volume control over it.

Ok so my idea for my first setup after a year of just mouse and keyboard was to first invest in a launchpad and secondly a midi enabled mixer I had in mind (I was looking at behringer or something light on the pockets) :p. I was thinking the launchpad mainly for functionality and flexibility over other trigger finger types of hardware. I mainly dj psy-trance but also trance, house, electro etc. Also using Traktor as my software.

My main question is from another dj's perspective would this be a good setup, I know mapping and everything would work but does it make sense?

Hey guys, I know many have done it before and I don't know how well we am going to do with this but I am going to try it anyway. I Plan on making a brand new youtube channel dedicated to unheard of artists within House and Techno mainly and Post their songs online. I may also make a soundcloud channel too with people's mixes but I will ask people to make me mixes, so please don't send me any as of this time.

If you want to maybe get involved in this, message me with your soundcloud so I can see your tunes and we can talk about maybe putting them up online. I think this would be good for all of us, If there are a few people on here who are featured on the channel then we are all more likely to get heard and get more fans/listeners. At the moment it is just at the very foundations, but message me now so I have an idea! If wont just be me working on the channel, there are a few already so you know that it's not just going to be something amateur, we'll put a lot of effort into it.

If i rearrange my track collection on another computer by copying the files..

and send the mp3 back to my laptop, by overwriting the mp3 files with identical named mp3 files, will they still have cue points and tempo grids?

What links the cue points etc and the mp3

Is it recognition of the mp3 file?
recognition of the mp3 file location or name?
or nothing once its overwritten I have to set up cues again?

how does it work?

Cheers
