Be there in time.
(With little experience "unexpected last minute issues" may arise - then it is always good to have a little timing buffer)
Yeah, always be early. And also, always remember, "It doesn't matter". If things start going pear shaped, just power through it and accept it went tits up, you're only human! If you start getting frustrated, then things are going to start going wrong in a big way.
Arrive early early early.
Soundcheck, talk/get to know the promoter/bartender/event planner.
Get a feel for them, and what to expect.
Don't over think
