Speakers
So after cashing in my school books and making some other transactions I am now sitting on about 200 dollars. I would like to either nice monitors for production, or a pair of speakers to use for parties (maybe 50-100 people). Preferably I would like to get powered speakers, that don't need an amp. I also am considering going the DIY route. This looks to be very feasible, since it seems to be extremely cost effective. I have looked at some of the kits on zalytron.com (although honestly I don't know a tweeter from a bass horn jk but you get the idea). So speaker deities of the great DJTT, (aka limey) lend me your thoughts. Would I be better off building studio monitors from scratch or trying to make a larger type loudspeaker/s? Also I would most likely be looking into getting a pre-chosen kit and assembling it, and I am up for making my own speaker enclosure (I have some woodworking skills), so if you have any kits you can recommend that would be awesome. Also if you guys know of any all inclusive guides for noobies like me that would be sick too.
Thanks,
Matt

If you don't go the building direction, I would save up a bit more cash and get some Tapco Thumps. They're around 250 each and are the best you can get in that cash field.

ahaha, that's awesome. the japanese subtitles make it even better. (that drumset is a beast too)
but seriously, if i had the cash i'd build my own. actually thinking of replacing the actual speaker cones in my big wooden cabinets with some that aren't from the mid-80s. have you found a good place to buy just the speaker drivers?

I don't think $200 will get you anything decent AUD or USD.

Go for some secondhand Wharfdale speakers from the late 80s, still with hardwooden cases and stuff. I've bought mine for 60 euros a pop and never looked back. There's hardly any speakers out there for that money, that gives that kind of full sound.
