Getting back into it
I realise this is a 'digital' djing site so I may receive biased opinions, then again I may not.
Anyhow, I am getting back into DJing after a three year stint away from it. So
I used to mix on turntables. Direct drives with more torque than technics and 20% pitch either way.
Anyway that's the besides the point, I am wondering whether to purchase turntables or cdjs.
Which would you recommend of the two?
I have never mixed on CDJs.

C'mon I thought I might get biased replys towards cdjs not ignored!
Can anybody answer my question?

CDJs seem to be the standard in most of the bars and clubs I've been in lately, but I do think there is a premium placed on vinyl DJs. Should you probably be able to rock it on a set of CDJs? Sure, but the old school vinyl DJ will always command respect.

If your intent is playing out at bars and clubs I'd say CDJ's as you probably wont need to bring your own gear, you'll already have whats standard and you can just bring a few simple USB keys with your pre-prepped playlists you compiled on Rekordbox and just play as you would at home.
If your intent is to hone your skills in the bedroom or parties where you bring your own gear, use whatever you are comfortable with as it'll make no difference either way.

I'd say CDJs. You can always upgrade with a turntable if you want to. It also depends on the venues you are gonna play at. A lot of techno clubs seem to still have turntables.

TT's are NOT an "upgrade" from CDJ's, anymore than CDJ's are an "upgrade" from a controller.
They are all just different tools (toys!) that do the same job.
Mixing music!

True! You can always get a turntable then ;)

ok so basically if I don't want to be hauling my gear to the
bars and clubs cdjs are a must. I imagine the sound quality
is obviously better when mixing, again I'm new to it so this question
might seem silly -
I like deep house so how would I go about getting c.d's with full
rips on? Can you download them for free or do you have to pay?
(I have no issues with paying being a vinyl DJ obvs)
It's exciting to mix on something new, but turntables just have something
special about them, arghhh this is a hard decision!

One of each. Then, either buy one of each again, or sell one and buy another of the other.

CDJs with USB or 1200s with timecode,
You wont go wrong with either
