I personally prefer a powered external hard drive over a USB powerd drive.

A powered external hard drive can't be portable?

its annoying sometimes when my friends play out they want me to hop in and play some tracks and 1) its a bigger external so not as portable 2) looking for something small these can prob fit in my pocket 3) i dont want to be looking for outlets in a dark crowded booth rather just run it through USB or firewire

the LaCie is definitely higher on the cool factor...but twice the price...i just don't know much about their products and reliability...

I ran Traktor 3 off a LaCie Rugged on an old iBook for sometime when my Macbook Pro was bust. I was using FireWire though but i have used it with USB2 and it was fine.

The LaCie is excellent and yes, its bounces when you drop it off a 4ft high table cus i did it accidently.

My friend has a WD Passport and it is falling apart.

If your gonna be gigging with it then the LaCie is a no-brainer.

I would get the WD since it's cheaper. HDD have a life expectancy of 5 years or less so they are pretty much disposable. I have a 500 WD external USB2.0 HDD and a Seagate 500GB USB2.0 and they work flawlessly but again they are kind of new. The WD was bought in 2009and the Seagate in 2010.

I use it mainly to file share with friends so they dont serve a particular reason...

If you just want to have it to carry sets around, why you dont buy a high capacity USB stick? a 32GB would serve you right and it is more portable and durable for gigging than an external HDD.
