I went on ebay. Got mine for virtually free, it's a Roland. They have name brands for ultra cheap there.

Where would you insert the footpedal for the unit?

Ean recommends the Boss FS-5U in this article. Actually he HIGHLY recommends it.

Not sure how much has changed in the foot pedal market over the last year though. Were there any kind of breakthroughs or anything like that?

The back, it has a dedicated midi footswitch jack.

That way you can hit and hold shift with your foot and have both hands free to do whatever it is you want to do with your hands.

i was wondering what the point was for a footswitch, duh...
im gonna have to order one of these bad boys! and they are dirt cheap, twenty bucks for a brand new one? hell yeah

so i was thinking, since the effects don't have a kill button (from what ive heard on the NI forum) on the actual controller using the foot pedal as a shift I can assign and make my own kill buttons. any other ideas as to what i can assign the "shift" pedal to do?
