yeah i get that, which is why i run an exclusively internal mixing only set-up on traktor - no limits in venues

but as far as i can see there isn't any real difference between the 800 and 1000, is there?

    It depends, are we talking an 800 MK1 or MK2 vs a 1000 MK2 or MK3?.

Assuming it's current generation which is being compared (800 MK2 and 1000 MK3), then the differences can be found by checking this website

ok, so a few differences, lol.

but, tbh, the ones that do exist wouldn't push me to pay that bit more for the 1000 (if it was me), the bits that are missing aren't really 'crucial'

The deal killer on the CDJ-800mk2 for me is the pitch control settings.

0.05% pitch resolution is a bit weak for my tastes, I'm way too used to the 0.02% on the 1000's. The more accuracy the better.

OK, so im thinking CDj 900...... just to get things a little clearer.

If I had the cdj900 at home, the transition to then play on the cdj1000's wouldn't be so difficult?

If I had cues stored on my tracks using usb of sd card using the 900's Is this then compatible with the cdj1000mk3's?

One of the features missing from the CDJ-800's and the CDJ-900's are hotcues; if this is a deciding factor for you I'd consider Traktor as the hotcue control is much better than on the CDJ-1000's (in my opinion anyway)

In terms of shove CD's in and play them though yes afaik it'd feel near-identical (900's vs 1000's)

I've owned MK3's myself, loved them, I also have thoroughly used the 900's, they are pretty much the same thing, with some cool features thrown in for a lower price.

The Traktor support is absolutely bad ass, no audio interface required, just plug in the USB, select Control Mode, and the sound is relayed automatically out of the RCA and into the mixer. For me at least, that means less cables and clutter.
