As far as i can see, its just a RCA to 3.5mm converter, but why is this so expensive?? What does it do?

It converts rca to coax or optical out. i guess so you can plug into a tv or optical in on a decent stereo.

The link you listed actually converts an RCA's analog signal into a digital SPDIF signal or digital Optical signal, but not 3.5mm (mini headphone jack size). This can be somewhat expensive considering that it actually converts audio from analog to digital within the device.

RCA (analog) to 3.5mm (analog) would be much cheaper.
