On the differences between Serato and Traktor

Traktor is the bees knees. IMHO.

You can use it to nearly EXACTLY emulate vinyl... as I have laboriously deliberated on far too long.

Or you can spend some time getting your grids spot on, and then effortlessly beat match 4 tracks in 4 decks in seconds. Give it some practice, and actually use ALL the information Traktor gives you, and you can be setting up repeatable quad drops with relative ease.


Not saying a quad drop would be the most pleasing musical experience in the world... probably far from it.


But Traktors ability to make it calculable, precise, and repeatable, is completely commendable.

I concur. I have trouble understanding the fascination with deejaying-if you can even call it deejaying-through a computer or a laptop.

I learned to deejay 15 years ago, which means I learned how to beat match with my hands and with my ears-actually touching a real record, two of them actually, and listening to the music. This is how I learned to mix records. Without a beat counter or a waveform to do it for me. I learned to deejay off the grid.

Is this what Serrato does, or does it actually match the beats for you?

Although I acknowledge the technology of programs like Serrato, Traktor, even Ableton-I cannot in any way respect these technologies or consider them in any way, shape, or form as the tools which are used to practice the craft of deejaying, the act of mixing two or more records together not only by beat matching but also by utilizing rythm, harmony, percussion, etc.

I think it's great that people can enjoy themselves and have a good time using new technology. Really, all that matters is that you have a good time.

But you gotta draw the line somewhere.

I push buttons on a keyboard all day long.

But I don't call it deejaying.

A few guys I know use serrato or traktor or ableton or whatever. They used to play vinyl.

I don't consider them deejays.

Do i consider myself a deejay?

I don't mix with a laptop.

But opinions are like axeholes. Everybody's got one.

Wow. Ok, you can get your "I beatmatch by ear" trophy you Mr. real Dj.

You know a Dj must also have a good character to deal with people and you sounding all snob about that I doubt you made to be a good Dj even with all that alleged experience.

If I dont have to worry about beatmatching (most of the time) then I worry about getting some nice FX and layerings going on, finding new music, or simply having some fun while playing.

ive been dj'ing 23 years on and off. he gets a dinosaur. i want a hot chick in a bikini. prefereably a freaky scene girl and i promise never to bring it up again.

More people use traktor world wide. Serato gets more use in the states thanks to Rane's brilliant marketing.

This was very true until about 2 years ago.

Then, NI started to aggressively target the American market. Think Shiftee, Craze, Klever. Now Traktor is out selling Serato hand over fist in America.

You dont see it in clubs as much because the generation of kids that are buying Traktor havent quite made it to the clubs yet so yeah you will see more Serato DJs at the moment.

I dont have any hard and fast figures for this so take it as it is. I do know what the Traktor sales figures roughly are though (very rough and only in comparison to previous years) from a reliable source and they made my eyes pop out.

Serato is more popular with alot of commercial club djs as it is easy to set up and less cluttered as all they want to do is play one track then the next. It does have more powerfull features but they are rarely used by most guys. The bridge and video djing to me would be its biggest selling points
