Truthfully macs have terrible specifications for what they cost. They only have 2 things going for them as far as I can tell, consistency in products working (but with the caveat of really very little supported software) and they seem idiot proof... though pcs are catching up in the last department. If you are decently technically savvy, not a piece of shit thief, and can keep the eyes off of porn there are very few reasons to purchase a mac book and save yourself a fuck ton of money.

but I forgot the most important thing, there;s the little apple light, way more important than any other macs have right. It says, "I've got more money than I know what to do with, so I spent 1500 dollars more on my laptop"

Consistency in working product should be #1 for a live setup anyhow & what on earth do you mean by little software support ?

In all honesty I'd prefer paying $200 more for a system thats gonna stay stable and not fail me, hell the aluminum enclosure alone is worth paying the premium!

And BTW I used to build and maintain PC's & Windows Servers for a living (and deal with the idiots looking at porn sites).

Some things in industries just get used because they work reliably. Anyone remember that thing that DJ's used to use a few years back... TECHNICS thats the one

You forgot the bit about reclaiming about 60% of its original value after more than 5 years :P

Factor in the form factor / Materials / OS etc. The price difference is about 25% additional over the same spec Dell on a 13.3 MBP ($900 vs $1200) .. losing a gig because something dies would be worth more IMHO.

IF however i was going for a PC laptop (back to the OP) i'd go IBM they are workhorses, ugly as sin but they work.

Dammit someone beat me to the ibm ^

Ive owned a blackbook, (sold to a mate) and a macbook pro, neither of which has crashed on me in near 3 years and i run a shitload at the same time, before i got maschine i was running 2/3 controllers traktor + ableton, and hooring it on the fx and both lappys stayed solid.

One DJ mates uses a thinkpad (not to be confused with ideapad, they're terrible) built himself for around $800 and i would say its probably as stable as my mac with a little more oomph. Bearing in mind if you go the windows OS route, you can probably never use that computer again for anything other than traktor.

But unless you know what your doing building + optimizing a win laptop, do yourself a favour and get a used mac or something, apple sometimes refurbish older laptops and sell them on the site, youve just got to keep an eye out. even ebay, the 09 model goes rather cheap these days and is still a beast, just make sure you get yourself applecare for used macs.

The Thinkpad is made for programmers and other hard core dudes in mind, probably the most reliable PC out there. They come in different flavours and price ranges, but the top models should be the best you can get, stability-wise. And they all look like shit.
That being said, I have DJed on both mac and PC since the early days of final scratch, and trust me, Macs are the industry standard for a reason. The biggest reason is since all macs are pretty uniform, the programmers at NI/serato/WTF can make a really clean and straightforward code with little bugs. With PCs, there are a million different configurations, and harder to program for.
On the Serato forums a while back, there were a huge Mac vs PC thread, and it pretty much ended when the Serato team admitted to programming it on Macs. case closed...

The OP doesn't want a Mac so let's not bring it up again please. If you have no idea what PC to get just stay out of the thread.

I've had a LOT of luck with my Asus machine. It's a beast and handles most warez I use rather well without a lot of cracking up.

i have the Dell Inspiron M1050 with i7 triple core processor, 2.7 Ghz stock, 4 Gb of ram i upgraded to 6Gb and overclocked it to 2.9. Its a beast, i can run traktor, steam, windows messenger and portal 2 at the same time without it even blinking lol. only problem i know is that it runs HOT. even before i overclocked it i was worried about the heat being an issue... since im a tech support guy i took it apart, surprisingly they installed everything so that the exhaust wouldnt effect anything so my worry was abolished.

Saying that the difference in price on a 13" MBP is 300 dollars is asinine... Right now on newegg there are toshiba 17" lappys for anywhere from 519 to around 900 so really it's a savings of over 1000 dollars when making an apples to apples comparison...Also, if people are using the windows based laptop as a performance tool, then why wouldn't they keep it off of the internet. Kind of analogous to what I have to get onto my hands (read - Employees, I work in the oilfield so it's a wee bit country) for, using 15"crescent wrenches and short 18" pipe wrenches as hammers when cutting and threading pipe (you need to knock off all the excess metal) so why not use the tool meant for the job, kinda like having a dj computer that you go look at porn and steal pc games with, you should have a separate computer for that if you are serious about the whole deal.

Also I think IBM sold their laptop manufacture to lenovo (a chinese company) so I don't think those laptops are around anymore
