It's ridicolusly powerful for a midi brain and could handle tons of inputs outputs. + it's soo god damn cheap and i have to use it somehow.

But it doesn't have any suitable connections...?

And I'm no expert but wouldn't you'd need to install a minimal linux distro, find suitable software and compile it for ARM if it does exist and make it yourself if it does not and then you'd have to configure it all find a way to make it communicate with another computer nicely and eurgh. Sounds like an INCREDIBLE amount of work when you can just get an entire computer behave like a midi brain.
You'd still need to sort out the hardware side of it after that...

Get a midi brain. This project looks cool.

I really like the idea of using a Raspberry Pi in a midi project actually. I think it might be more useful to use in conjunction with something like an Arduino though:

Eben Upton: "A friend of ours wrote a lot of the NXT software, so we're already thinking about how to hook up a Pi. I think what Stefan suggests should work, though it can be a tricky thing to get working. We hope to see a lot of this sort of thing, where the Pi is used to add extra processing capability to popular but less-powerful systems like Mindstorms and Arduino. The face recognition plan sounds like it would benefit from a camera add-on board or the micro-Pi I mentioned earlier; we need to get cracking on that."

But it doesn't have any suitable connections...?
yes it does - http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/384 - there's also plans to sell a breakout board:

to the OP - I've already started a thread about the Pi here - http://forum.djtechtools.com/showthread.php?t=45312

I still find it very hard to believe you couldn't find a suitable midi brain for equal cost that won't require you to put anywhere near so much work into it.

why would it take any more time to program a Pi than to program a microprocessor like the Atmel in an Arduino? The Pi has far more programming langugages available for it so it would potentially be easier!

of course, if you're talking about a Livid, Highly Liquid, UMC-32 or a similarly pre-programmed midi brain then that's a different matter. But then you're losing the flexibility and (generally speaking) paying a lot more.

    Livid Brain = $189
    Raspberry Pi = £25

Maybe you're right. Now that I look again midi brains seem to cost a lot more than I remember them doing so...

    Cheers..

Do you think that is possible to the Pi to run MicroXp and Rebirth?? If so you could build a workstation machine..

Couldn't find it in this thread, so i guess i can add it

if you don't mind to program your own firmware and want MIDI over USB:

the TeensyUSB; It has the same chip as the midifighter.
