Had a bottle of Jack with my mates this weekend.
Probably nothing special, but still tasted good.

That's what it's all about V - a simple blend can hit the spot as much as an 18 year-old single malt. Personally don't get bourbon though.

Some bourbons are ok, maker's mark is pretty nice, but I'm not a fan of JD. May have something to do with drinking too much if it at university.

That's a lot of fine libation - nevermind some fine whiskey. Cheers.

Gonna give MM a try FEP - not sure if I'll get it in SA though. Guess bourbon goes against my Scottish heritage.

i think mm is a good bourbon, but i prefer maker's 46 (which is probably my favorite overall bourbon). it just has a great flavor, nice balance and it's pretty cheap out here. i will say if you can ever try some pappy van winkle 20 year be sure to go for it. i'm not sure if it will make it's way out there but it's hands down the best bourbon i've ever had. i'm waiting for the next release so i can hopefully get 1 of several bottles that will make it to my area. it's a bit pricey (about $110 in the states) but completely worth it.

i'm more drawn towards the buttery, toffee and caramel profiles in some bourbons and tend to not like the more spicy styles as much. i also really like the four roses small batch i have. it's great in an old fashioned or on the rocks. i tend to drink all my bourbons this way (or maybe as a manhattan) as i don't usually prefer them neat since the flavors (and burn) tend to be very strong. i love how they slowly change as the ice starts to dilute the spirit letting new characteristics come through while others slowly vanish.

So elegantly described S - you've convinced me to broaden my horizons. Will go shopping later & let you know.
