Active Speakers : 'Monitor Finesse' or 'PA Grunt'
After months of dilemma, I went to buy a pair of studio monitors today - I'd narrowed it down to Mackie MR5's, Rockit RP5's & Adam A5X's. Was going for a direct shoot-out. All within R200 (about $30) of one another. All was good, until I heard the Mackie 350 SRM's (v2) - which are astounding. As well as more expensive.
I played a (small) gig on Tuesday on a club system (Tannoy/JBL combo powered by a Rolls amp). The sound-check sounded good, but about 30 min into my set, the sound failed - almost as if my S4 caused system 'fatigue'. I play a LOT of small gigs (think bar/lounge vs club) which is going to increase hugely between now and September. This got me thinking of looking into 'Compact Loudspeakers' (sic) RATHER than monitors.
So here's the question(s) -
1. Do smaller (ie less sophisticated) systems 'fatigue' and have a resultant change in audio quality?
2. Do I go monitor or compact loudspeaker?
3. Am I sacrificing audio 'finesse' for 'grunt'?
4. At twice the price (R5000 vs R10 000) are there other brands worth investigating (Behringer et al)?
Thanks for listening.
