If you want to turn this into a career - CDJ's and a mixer.

As a hobby - Controller. Not to bash, I use an S4 and TT's, but a career DJ uses the equipment that will be at his job (a.k.a. the club), which means buying the mixer set-up and learning on CDJs or timecoded vinyl.

Honestly though, start with a controller. You can learn the fundamentals of DJing on one just fine. Make it a hobby at first. If you find out you like it (like I have) upgrade your equipment. For instance, I'll be selling my S4 soon and buying a Denon dn-x1600. The s4 is nice because it's modular, but it's also expensive at 900 dollars.

How much do you have to spend?

I said controller. I just used the S4 as an example. That's why I asked how much he had to spend, so I might point him in the right direction.
