I have these speakers in my home office and they sound really good. I would NOT remotely consider using these for a party. Worst case, hire something.

Probly awesome to use for your home set up, but try craigslist.
i've seen so many deals in my area lately. from speakers amps lighting/dmx systems to the whole set up like 65-80% and in great condition.

Watts are Irrelevent ... We should be talking about speaker efficiency.

    I used to work in a club that had what was 3.3k turbosound rig .. 6xtops @ 150watts each and 4 x twin 18' subs@ 600watts each.

    Capacity was around 600-650.

It was one of the cleanest and loudest rigs I ever had the pleasure of playing on (SPL was clocked at around 128db's at full whack if I remember correctly and was one of the loudest at the time in the country).

Hi-fi, Computer Speakers, Car Speakers and Amps for the most part have greatly exaggerated specs.

Seriously get a S/H cheapy PA system if its volume you want at a good price and quality is not an issue... dont get computer speakers FFS

thank you for the informed post. It shocks me that people still talk about how many watts they got. your exactly right that what people should be interested in is speaker efficiency. ie how many db @ 1 watt.
I've heard systems that would do 123db at less than 50 watts.

Yep all about efficiency Those specs are not great anyway in terms of watts. 35 watts rms each for satellites and 130w rms at 5% thd.

For those that don't know thd stands for total harmonic distortion and 5% is ALLOT and I would definitly not consider it as clean power. Any decent amp has power ratings at 1% or under with 0.1% being considered audiophile standard.

Kinda OT ... but as a comparison for THD

    http://www.tnt-audio.com/ampli/t-amp_e.html

I used to own one paired with some JBL control 5's and it was about a zillion times louder and cleaner than ANY computer speakers I've used.

Really cool little Amps BTW for anyone looking for something nice in the studio .. rated at a measly 8watts, but a VERY nice 6 watts

back OT, Celestion KR-2's (About $150 a pair) are great efficiant speakers for reasonable size house parties and sound great for general use.. plus they have overload protection built in. I forgot I had them for a while.
