I listened to your mix on my laptop yesterday while awaiting my parents visit from out of town. Here's my feedback.

    - Wow, that's a lot of tracks mixed quickly and relatively smoothly. As I mentioned to my GF, your mix seems to indicate what a person who was a skilled DJ in the past can do with Traktor, a controller and the sync button.

    - On the other hand, you tended to rely on drops and/or sound effects for transitions in a way that.. while I understand it is.. the tradition of the hip-hop mixtape... is sorta like cheating and can get a bit old.

    - The 80s bit reminded me of "Rock The Casbah" by DJ Spinbad, but without the 80s quotes and etc. that made that mix extra great. I am of an appropriate age to have been able to play "name that tune" to the mix and get them all right..

    - On the other other hand, I told my GF that if you played that 80s mix in a club full of 35-45 ladies in Key West, the dance floor would GO THE HELL OFF!!

    - I turned it off when the hip-hop bit came on, because I was a bit exhausted by the mega-mixage and wasn't really looking for a hip-hop mix at that moment. Who is the target audience for this mix, half-80s and half sorta modern thug?

Thanks for posting and keep at it!

haha i love ur intros to ur reviews... setting the scene.... cheers for your reply... in answer to ur questions...

why so many songs??? u quizzed me on this before

tempo sync button over beat sync.. beat sync i feel is more for the edm boys with their quantized tracks and stationary tempos..... it is impossible to mix so many tracks so quickly without tempo sync for mine.... as i ascend tempo gradually in my sets...the tempo fader is only used once the tracks are synced

first 20 or so mins was 80's pop- my favoured type of music..

next 50 mins if u listened completely was a mix of chart hits from the 70s 80s 90s 00s 10s.. first few tracks were hip hop cos tempo was ascending from 70- 135 bpm...

    - dropping a sound effect or drop cheating??? put it this way tempo sync allows the 2 songs to be matched instantly with nudges here or there.. so no unsynced beats need to be disguised.... also this set had been edited (against everything i stand for but as i've found out organic mixtapes dont get respected so i had to conform only for my demo tho) so definately nothing to disguise bro..

    - my transitions are always between 8- 16 bars.. so what does an old school dj who previously spent this time riding tempos, nudging, slowing etc do in this time nowadays??? for me i favour triggering the sample decks over use of effects, looping etc... however in this mix it had more to do with the theme i.e rise of the machine -"transforming" sounds in transition- get it get it haha maybe it is lame to some... but hey thats my style.. different strokes.. i do appreciate people who dont like the use of sample drops especially ones that every hiphop dj and there dog uses i.e that f...ing quick double horn sound...
i like to think my drops are unique as i make my own..

cheers for your reply my man and appreciate what you do on this forum!!!

    peace...

I'm not sure I understand what you mean here.. you are using traktor, and there's tempo sync and phase sync. When you hit the "sync" button on my controller, at least, it does both?

next 50 mins if u listened completely was a mix of chart hits from the 70s 80s 90s 00s 10s.. first few tracks were hip hop cos tempo was ascending from 70- 135 bpm...
Yeah, noticed this in the tracklist but didn't make it past the modern hiphop..

Ok. Basically I think this answers the question I wasn't sure how to ask. It's physically difficult to mix that many tracks that quickly and that "on," and still hit all the phrasing perfectly. I figure you're a good DJ, but very few DJs are robotically perfect at this pace. When I hear sound effects or drops I do subconsciously assume edits or cheating, but clearly that is not always the case.

    - my transitions are always between 8- 16 bars.. so what does an old school dj who previously spent this time riding tempos, nudging, slowing etc do in this time nowadays??? (... more about drops ...)
Yeah, like I said, I understand it is part of the tradition and relatively appropriate to the style of music and mix. I am just not wild about it as a matter of personal taste. Your drops seemed more varied than most DJs, which makes sense if you make your own.

I listened to this mix again on the car stereo while driving across the USA with my parents. It was especially appropriate for this purpose, though I had to mute it during "fuck shop". FWIW!
