    Default The Gas sound....?

    Hi,

Ok, I'll try to explain it best I can- please dont flame me if there is a really simple answer.

Listening to lots of electro House over the years some tracks have what I describe as a "gas sound" usually at the drop which slowly fades. It reminds me of a cannister letting off gas and can sound pretty good.

Ive noticed it on "Glasgow" by David Guetta and am interested if anyone knows how to create this sound. I assume its a production thing as apose to a DJ thing- maybe its a highly tuned Gater or possible some kind of filter?

Im not really an Ableton user- but wondered if this a common technique? Im a big user of Traktor and would love to recreate the gas sound on top of a track but can not get anywhere near at the moment.

Im sure if anyone knows- this is the place to find out.

    Cheers

The sound is filtered white noise.

Usually, they will add a sidechained compressor attached to a kick to give it that ducking effect.

I also posted a quick generator for white noise a while back. It's Ableton-only.

We call it the white noise burst. Usually an oscillator set to white noise run through a high pass filter with lots of reverb.

The iceverb effect in traktor can get pretty close to that although it doesnt use white noise the same way.

The GAS sound? Thats a fart innit?

    LOL

I would say White Noise with a filter on it to control the sweep.

I hate that sound with all my heart. it usually has nothing to do with the track at all.

nice, punchy track playing, yay break, yay buildup, waiting, waiting, come on!, yesss,

this effect has gotten a lot of flak (IMO rightfully so), since it's in many ways a trick to hide bad sound.

It's like if you suck at playing the guitar, just turn up the distortion so no one will know. Same principle.

Overused sound for sure. Learning the side chaining technique is a very valuable production trick though.

I personally love white noise in electro. But only when it isn't overused. My favourite use of it is in No Beef - Afrojack & Steve Aoki. There's a bit around 23 seconds, and it just makes me want more. White noise is great to tease with, but overuse it just tacky.
