You can use your S4 with your monitors. For $250, you won't get better audio quality than it already gives you.

Frankly, if your room isn't tuned, you could spend five grand and probably not hear a difference.

Thats what I was thinking because I know the S4 has the Audio 4 DJ inside of it. But how would I go about using the Monitors with Logic/standard iTunes use through the S4?

After you have installed your S4 and all the drivers.

When you plug the S4 into your computer you can change your audio routing within windows

Right click on the speaker icon then goto playback devices and just use the S4 soundcard instead of the standard soundcard within your computer.

I'm using a Mac, but I'll be able to figure that part out. Thanks a lot for the help

I was thinking about doing that too, it made sense at the time, but then I realized I needed an audio interface to connect my microphone to record into Ableton. I did a bit of researching, and got advice from Padi_04 and then decided to pick up a Komplete Audio 6. I love it. It runs about $300, but use like a 15% off Coupon (Available right now for Cyber Monday) from Guitar Center and it will end up around $255 right in your budget!

Thanks- I noticed you're using the Rokits... how are they?

They are phenomenal. However it's all I have used. I have two studio's, and use Rokits in both. One is a shared studio (I co-own a hip hop label, and it's the other dude's studio at his house), those are Rokit 5s that are in there. In my own studio I have 6s, and the awesome part about it is that my Rokits only costed me $89 a piece. I spent $200 after taxes / shipping for the pair. Couldn't have asked for a better deal.

    Ahh. That makes more sense.

You can use your S4 if you just want output. Just plug it in an select it as the interface in your DAW. You can even use it for system audio output by opening Audio MIDI Setup and right-clicking on it…the options you should pick will be obvious.

If you want to record as well and the S4 doesn't work (I thought it had a preamp, though I wouldn't expect it to be spectacular)…the Komplete Audio 6 is popular…but I wouldn't buy it, I don't think. It's missing a lot of stuff that I want (more analog IO, mostly) and has things (like digital IO) that I can't use right now.

The cheapest I'd go would be the Avid Mbox 3 Mini, but its 2x2 with 1 preamp for about $250, which means it isn't as flexible as the KA6 (which is essentially 4x4 with 2 preamps). It's just better, assuming it's built anything like its big brothers. But the difference is going to be pretty freaking small.

The Presonus Firebox got replaced by the AudioBox line when they realized that PC manufacturers were never going to realize that Firewire was better. So you could look at those too, but I wouldn't buy them over Avid.

I don't think anyone else that I think of as high-end has anything in the $250 range. Apogee, RME, and MOTU all start higher than that, IIRC, and I don't have experience with much else to comment on. And RME and Motu are really just reputation.

So…think about what you actually want to do with it. If you just want output and that one mic pre, your S4 works. If you want something smaller or the S4's mic pre isn't good enough, there are a lot of options, and there's not a huge difference in quality at that price range. I'd suggest the Mbox 3 mini if you want a slight bump in recording quality and the KA6 if you need more IO or 2 preamps. I also don't think the S4 has phantom power if you're using a mic that requires it…so either of those interfaces would work better.

Also, I'm a fan of my RP5s but would probably not buy them for a studio if I could afford better. I got a good deal on them, and I like them fine. They won't be the thing holding you back for a long time, nor are they the thing holding me back.

Thanks for the great reply... I don't plan on using a mic in the near future so the s4 should suffice for now.
