Default Can I be tracked at University

What's up guys. So recently I found out that the university internet is about 80Mbps, that's approximately 10MBps. Does anyone know if they can track exactly where I am or the information on my laptop, i'm not logged in with a university account, just using a wired connection.

Well, they can't see the info on your laptop, but they can monitor what you download over their connection. From a technical standpoint, I'm not sure of the limits on how specifically they monitor, and beyond that, how they use such information is up to whatever you've agreed to about the university computing policy.

Considering you're on a university connection, and I'm SURE you've somewhere knowingly, or unknowingly, agreed to their Terms of Use, they'll have your ass if you're not smart with it. So be smart...

Yes, be very careful. My dad works for DePaul University and does consulting with several other colleges around the country.
The main thing to be concerned about it filesharing sites. Although they usually don't due individuals anymore, record companies contact state AND private colleges. The school will then turn over the names of students who have downloaded music illegally through the school's internet connection. It's not just students, my dad's boss actually got sued. They had to settle out of court for $4,000. Just be careful.

Yes they can track exactly where you are, if traffic from your laptop is suspicious ie. torrents, porn sites, etc.

no they cannot see what is on your laptop. however they can see everything you download from the internet. you can however encrypt all your communications so they cannot see anything you do over the internet. the person on the other end must be using the same encryption to receive the messages, you could also use a vpn to establish the connection. The university should have settings in place on there firewall to stop any bit torrent traffic if they know way they are doing. this is not overly complicated to by pass however you will be breaking ur end user agreement. my uni lab is 1gig per second btw.
