    Default First Club Gig

First of all...thanks to everyone on here. forum has helped out in so many ways

Going to try to keep this from a novel

Plan was to start looking for gigs end of january but I gave a buddy a few mixes and someone heard it and I ran into that guy who has a monthly Prog house night outside of the city (hour from where i live). A dj just backed out and said if i wanted in, it would be him me and another guy and i could have 30 min. (i assume opening and i would play some funky tech house and house...)

Catch. he didnt want to do a comp change out, and he wanted me to send him what i wanted to play and i would use his comp. So i said i dont like it but let me bring a usb over and test your set-up (cdj850's midi into traktor)

I get to his place and we start talkin and he tells me I'm not opening and I could go on at anytime throughout the night. So now im freakin in my head, how am I supposed to give him enough music without just handing him my library.

I decide I will just use his library and be fine...wrong. music is not even remotely organized (s%^t is everywhere in random titled folders, one track had a tong tag on it, no cuepoints or beat grids, genres arent correct). the midi mapping is messed up, deck A's tempo slider controls Deck B's gain)
My brain was telling me to cancel but thats not something i wanted to do and figured I would just make the best

I asked in 4 different ways to use my equipement on the other 2 channels on the clubs mixer but he said there would be no room.

In the end we agreed that he would leave the CDj's at home and use his VCI and I could use just an X1 and the clubs mixer.

Now I'm excited and its a good thing I'm anal about my music organization and have everything by genre and pace(open, mid, peak) So I will be able to match whenever I come on

Here is a pic from last months show when he dropped avicii levels

Although I was going to look for after hour type gigs for deep house, techno, tech house, Im really looking forward to making a club rage and its going to be a super mainstream set SHM,Avicii, skrillex,Alesso style...maybe in the end I will be able to find residency's to play both styles

Who knows how much I'll play but its an opportunity and thats all i could ask for.
Pics and hopefully video to follow

Edit....I'm bringing everything with me cuz i have no idea what to expect....extra RCA's, powerbars, probably my xone 22. etc

we'll see what the crowd is like....The resident dj didnt know what deep house was. and i'm assuming the crowd will be the same. Not that I'm a guru or anything....I starting in prog house and went to ibiza and came back with a love for then deeper stuff. the last few months I've been building up that library...its getting respectable

In the last year all the university towns have blown up and get big prog/electro guys like sebastion ingrosso, alesso, avicii, r3hab, dada life, porter....Most of this crowd will be people home from school. My plan is to keep it to the genres they are used to and came for. Maybe test a couple tracks to see where i can take it but I dont have high hopes of getting out of that genre......This is my first time playing to a crowd that is coming only for EDM. The only mobile gigs i've done have been to...top 40/mash-up reggae crowds

I moved my comp out of my face and off to the side a couple months ago so I'm hoping I can focus more on the crowd.

I spent a couple hours beatmatching with channel A set on itunes and Channel B for traktor. to practice change overs. I didnt want to cheat and look at the comp/waveforms for help.

I feel really calm about things...i'm sure the nerves might build up when the time comes but I feel like I've done everything possible to prepare for this...and now there is nothing left but to just do it! and then build upon this experience.

Its not cheating you DJ the way you DJ theres no good or wrong or cheat or anything
there are only 2 kinds for me Train DJ's and Untrain DJ's

You just go there and mix the devil out of the crowd's soul jajajajaj

Alright so that was an experience.

    Here's how it went
Got there at 10:30 with the second resident dj, closer was playing to an empty bar. he said to the other guy...basically wtf i'm not supposed to be opening tonight.

So at 11:00pm I hooked up 1 channel into the mixer...the playing dj asked me to load my first track.. He then changed my bpm to match his which i didn't know people did but i was really appreciative of. I waited for the end of the second verse to start my track and hit the mark on the money.....boom...the change over was sooo seamless. hooked the second channel up

    opening track was
Where Do You Go (Alex Kenji Remix) Francesco Diaz ft. Michael Feiner

my plan was to stay away from effects or anything overly creative. I just wanted to hit my marks and keep the levels right

There were 3 girls dancing only and then a couple guys came out and maybe 10 people were dancing but there was probably only 20 people in the club
I played another 4 funky tech house tracks. I made some errors but nothing anyone noticed....right when i was mixing. the sound guy came up and turned the master up....which freaked me out because I thought I had done something wrong. And then played this (which is one of my favourites from the summer)

Edge Of The Earth (Prok & Fitch Floorplay Mix) Richard Dinsdale, Sam Obernik & Hook N Sling

which was a dancefloor killer. people went for drinks. Started testing some top 40 remixs (still tech house) to see what got people going and the club was starting to get busy and the floor was starting to fill. maybe 30 people on it
Then I brought in Bingo players - cry just a little. People started piling on the dancefloor and I heard some cheers before the song was even full in.

now that I had people.... I knew what to do.
    here's what I played
I'll Never Dream I'm In Love Kaskade vs. Alex Guadino
Middle Finger (Bingo Players Remix) Cobra Starship
Pumped Up Kicks (Robbie Rivera Remix) Foster The People
What Happens In Vegas (Club Mix) Chuckie, Gregor Salto
Sexy And I Know It (Mord Fustang) LMFAO
Where Have You Been Dutch (MAKJ Bootleg) Rihanna vs. Laidback Luke
Piece Of Heaven (Vocal Extended Mix) Promise Land & Cozi
Beats Inside My Head - Donald Glaude & Revolvr Remix Scooter & Lavelle, Sue Cho

Dancefloor still full. couple guys trippin on M kept comin up to the booth and shakin my hand and sayin I was killin it..they wanted to know where else I was playin

12:15pm Hand it over to the next DJ who said he wanted to drop his tag to start. So I built up some tension and did a freeze.

He only got 45 minutes before the next guy...he said he wanted to give me extra time because he does this a lot and wanted to make sure i had fun.....What a good guy. he played the bangers...internet friends. otherside (third party) levels etc.

Then I witnessed the weirdest thing..the closer came on @ 1 and played tech house. the crowd was not really receptive at all..some hot girls came up and requested electro stuff and he said he didnt have it...they left right away. the dancefloor started to slowly clear.

I will say this...This guy was sick. he hit every mark. used effects beautifully. I was loving his set but it was only me and 8 other people that did. when I was walking through the crowd people were asking me to go back on...and I just said..."its not my time...this guy is killing it. just dance and have fun"
He usually plays after hours and it showed. I just pretended it was 5 am and went on the dancefloor myself.

At 1:50 I think he realized he needed something heavier so brought out Day N Night (crookers remix) which i thought came out of no where (and is soo old) but the people left liked it and then straight back to tech.....and then...He played sexy bitch -david guetta WTF?

    Wut I learned:
-Not all mixers have a filter (djm500)
-I really need to work on my eq'ing...on a big system it really shows.
-Crowd never notices minor screw ups like you do. so relax
-I need to learn to use effects as cleanly as the closer... you barely noticed them. I usually hate effects

its a monthly show and as of now it looks like I'm invited back

Here's the only pic I took 15 minutes after my set -waiting for pics/video from a friend

Sorry for the Novel... Merry Christmas everyone
