    Default Practicing question?

When your at home practicing let say you bought a few new songs and you are trying to get to know them better. Do you just "mix on the fly" or do you try to construct a set?

usually just mix them on the fly a few times and learn them

I usually start by beatgridding the song. Then I have a look at the small picture under the deck showing an overview of the whole track. I normally place some cue points on places which optically seem to be changes in the song. And after this preparation part I start the track for the first time and begin with mixing on the fly and beat juggling. If everything works fine the song will be added to one of my playlists.

If it isn't too intimate a question....

What would be an example of the comments you would write?

Perfect example is a track I bought the other week. I like the choon, but really hate the vocals, so I've said as much in the comments (which I also used as a reminder to go back and drop cues around the vocal parts). If I pull off a mix I particularly like, I'll make a note of the track with either a ^ or v to indicate a rise or drop in 'energy' or a - if it stays about the same (I also set a star rating to indicate a tracks energy if it's the first play through)

And that's pretty much it. Over time I've built up cues and comments just while jamming. Mostly cos I hate feeling like I'm doing 'prep' work, and mostly cos I get bugger all uninterrupted time as it is. Ocossionally I will shut down the mix and focus on building up my sample library and building loops from samples, but its just not as fun as mixing
