Default What Era would you consider "old school" ??

I found it really funny that when talking with a younger fellow DJ the other night about the topic of "old school", he started rattling off late 90's songs. Being a product of the late 80's myself, I just had to laugh.

So what do you consider "old school" ?

SL1100, Disco time I guess. Begun in 82ish here, I consider myself as Old-School.

Anything pre '92 is proper old school to me. But then a lot of the stuff circa '93-'97 is still pretty old school stuff too (like Northern Exposure sort of tracks). But not quite the same as its all a little more polished.

'97-2002 sort of stuff I just consider older, but not necessarily old school.

'Old School' just means things from a earlier era, so it means many different things to many different people, in many different genres, depending on exactly who and what you're talking about.

For me, 'Old School' are wax cylinder recordings from the late 19th century... yup HipHop was proper HipHop back then...

Old School is just a generic term for mostly any genre. I prefer to use it in conjunction with Genre terms.

    So like:

    Old School House 90s-95s
    New Wave 80-89s
    Old School Techno 89 - 92

Most people form their musical tastes between the ages of 15 and 25...roughly the high school & college years. "Old school" will (almost) always refer to the music you were listening to during that decade of your life.

Most people don't start calling it "old school" until they are in their "mid-30's".

    Anything before 2000, basically.

Maybe it's a product of my age, but that's about the point I started listening to electronic stuff. And so I automatically direct anything that came before that as the uncharted domain of "old school" where I'm still learning it to this day.

It's much easier to keep up with everything since, since I've been following it. (At least house, dnb, dubstep and breaks).

As I've completely been getting into Hardstyle and Hardcore lately, I feel like a kid again trying to learn.
