Default Some stupid questions about DJing

What separates a good DJ from a great DJ?
Do all the great DJs (Aoki, Guetta, Skrillex, etc...) produce their own beats?
Is mixing just putting in a CD and editing it real time?
Are all songs made by DJs mixes? do they produce 2 songs and just mix them?

    Thanks :3

it seems like everything is done in the studio so whats the point of bringing all your DJing equipment to parties and stuff?

    skrillex sucks!!!

damn i though i was going to be the first... LOL

they all produce, mixing is just playing two tracks together, no tricks, little effects, sometimes loops but always good timing and eq skills... Whoever started saying remixing in place of "mixing" is a douchebag, remixing is not done live, it's done in the studio where care can be taken...

Quite unimportant if Skrillex sucks or not.
I think the main target of DJing should be to create a transition between songs, that is as smooth as possible. Best case would be that your listener finally thinks everything would be one big song.
Probably the "easiest" way to achieve this goal is producing your own songs because they can be created as you like and be prepared perfectly for your mix. If you buy songs you will sometimes notice that it's a great song but impossible to be brought into the mix smoothly. So I think producing helps to be a great DJ...

tough one, but I think if you should learn to dj first, it will give you time to discover what it is about you like about dance music and give you knowlege of patterns that are repeated in production, if you were capable of producing now you probably wouldn't be on this forum, so stick with djing for now as it's much easier to start and not get discouraged because you don't know what you are doing.

I don't think skrillex is that bad to be honest, I was just being a douche... but a lot/all of his tracks use exactly the same sounds, lucky they are good sounds, but honestly I can't see hi having longevity using the same soundpacks for every song, people get bored and with knife party on the scene that should happen sooner rather than later...

I produce and dj but I started with DJing and would also recommend this way to everyone else. By DJing you get a knowledge of how songs are structured (the 32/64 bars system etc.) and learn to analyse your music more than by just listening to music on your Ipod.
