I personally don't plan my live sets. Maybe small sequences of 2-3 songs that I like to plan to be together cause they sound awesome together, but that's the max. Beyond that I work out of planned crates (styles, genre's, etc) and play based on feeling.
Today I was watching the video of Armin van Buuren at Ultra Fest 2012 and it got me thinking regarding your article about "planning DJ sets". Got me to wondering how large stage productions like this sequence visuals to the sets... as there was lots of correctly sequenced visual items in Armin's set... lyrics on the screen for "Mr Brightside", song titles, etc.
So is Armin playing a planned set, and the VJ knows the plan then knows how to play along with? Is Armin controlling both DJ and visuals? Or what's really happening here?
