Windows 8

The new windows 8 OS is coming. Although it still under beta testing, it looks awesome.

I got to play with it for about 30 minutes and really didn't like the new design. I guess that wasn't a whole lot of time but I'm kind of attached to the traditional desktop.

It's just the love child of an Xbox UI/OS, the Windows Phone OS and Win7. An implementation of cues to blur the line between the devices, and breed familiarity amongst all devices powered by Windows OS's. Nothing too different than what Apple does now, and is trying to further with IOS and OSX.

I think the only thing that you would need to get used to is the different UI as it applies to user settings, however you can still access the traditional control panel should you prefer.

Windows 2000 was my favourite Microsoft OS by a long way. All the stability and speed of XP without all the stupid visual effects/skins. When I finally upgraded to XP I always ran it with the 'classic' theme. It was also massively popular in the enterprise/corporate world; many businesses/banks/etc used Win2K until very recently (MS only ended support a year or 2 ago).

Anyway, I'm more excited for Win8 than I was for Win7. I personally wasn't a fan of the Win7 aero look. Metro seems a much nicer/cleaner aesthetic and I'm looking forward to seeing how application developers take advantage of the new widget-style start menu. Will be particularly good for media centres I think...
