All Serato's software is free (with the exception of the bridge) but only is compatible with controllers with a partnership to Serato.

Another method to prevent illegal distribution, is to make distribution free. Yet limit which features are unlocked and have the "key" be the actual paid for (presumably) hardware.

All Serato products - Scratch Live, Itch and Intro can be downloaded for free but you only get the "offline" player which is one deck. You can use it to prepare tracks, playlists, cue's, etc. To get the full version you need to plug in an authorized controller or in the case of Scratch Live a Rane Soundcard (SL1,2,3,4). There is only midi mapping available in Scratch live. Itch and Intro both come mapped to their respective hardware. The only workaround is you can map the key strokes to a controller (for example you can map cue points to a midi fighter) but really that and loops is about all you can map.

I do not know of any one that has "hacked" Itch or Intro to completely fully map it.
