Default Sultans of Scratch, take a look

Besides DJ Hero and Scratch:the ultimate dj coming up i found this surfing through youtube.

"Sultans of Scratch is a rhythm based party game centered around hip hop culture made by students at the Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy.

Play together as a DJ and dancer crew while competing against rival crews. With innovative rhythm based gameplay, fresh hip hop tracks, and cutting edge technology; Sultans of Scratch will create a new and exciting experience for both beginner and veteran players alike. "

Looks very interesting to me, respect to those dudes.

That looks similar (excluding the dancer) to a game developed by Sega a couple years ago called Crackin' DJ. Too bad it never managed to get to europe, as far as I know it can be found at a few arcades in the US.

    Hey guys,

My name is Brian and I am one of the students working on Sultans of Scratch. It's really awesome that you found our videos on YouTube, although I'd like to point out that the Tutorial Alpha video was from quite a while ago and was when the game looked really rough.

We worked with an outside producer so that all of the music is original and also collaborated with two engineering students from UCF to create a custom DJ controller for our game which can be seen here:

If you want to check out more information about the game you can visit the official website: http://www.sultansofscratch.com. It's cool that a few people mentioned Crackin' DJ because that is actually where the DJ mechanic evolved from. It's great to see that there are actually people out there looking at the game. When it's completed in a few weeks it will be free to download from our school's website (http://www.fiea.ucf.edu), hopefully you all will check it out!

I will make sure to check it out, I am a bit of a collector when it comes to music games so I won't miss the chance. Nice to see other music games getting some attention besides the guitar games and DJ Hero (I am a fan of beatmania myself, if you know what that is ). I just wish I had a chance to try Crackin' DJ out but I live in Sweden so I have no chance. :/

Is there a way to play with the keyboard or a gamepad of choice? I feel it would be too much of a hassle to build the DJ controller by myself. :P
Are the scratches working as buttons that activate when you spin them in either direction (a la beatmania) or are they analogue?

How long have you been working on the game? The mix of a DJ and a dancer hasn't been done before as far as I know, so good job at introducing that . I will try to remember to post impressions once I have tried the game!

Our game allows for the use of custom peripherals (i.e. the turntable controller and dance pad), 360 controllers or keyboard and mouse. Pre-production of our game began mid-February so we've been working on it for about 5 months. We're using Gamebryo, which is the same game engine used for Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion and Fallout 3.

To answer your other question I definitely know what Beatmania is. The way it works for both dancer and DJ is that notes stream down screen (similar to every other rhythm game) but the difference is that our game gives the player the choice of what to input. For example, on any note the dancer has the choice to input up, down, left or right. Similar to a fighting game, our player can string together inputs to create combos, which do many things, like cause the dancer to do awesome dance moves. For the DJ, an input is read when the fader is on a disc and the DJ scratches that disc up or down. To read a second scratch, the player only need to stop scratching, and begin again. Hopefully that answered your question.
