You are looking for FM synthesis.

I picked up a secondhand FM8 license for like $70 on KVR forums for that same reason, it gets the job done for that type of thing.

Even just taking various subbass presets and going into advanced mode and switching through the table of like 100+ routing combinations yields tons of interesting results.

Does FM8 not float your boat? Xone is exactly right that you are looking for FM synthesis.

If that is all I need then I guess I am good to go, thanks. Didn't know if anyone had other options or other plugins, older vintage synth style vsts or anything. Thanks.

Use the presets, I agree that FM synthesis programming is not for the beginners. If you have Logic, EFM is pretty good, too. And EFM's user interface is me thinks the best FM programming model out there just now.

The "How to Make a Noise: FM Synthesis" book really, really helped me get started with understanding FM. Not that you have to spend money on learning it, just I feel like 3 bucks is worth it for the amount of time googling around it saved me.
