Headphone mod - Coiled Cable.

I set about moving the 3m coiled cable from my old Sony HDR phones to my Ultrasone HFI-700s because cable management was getting on my nerves.




Results were.. mixed. Happy to have a shorter cable, happy to still have he screw adapter 3.5mm jack on the end so I can use it with MP3 player and pro audio cards, but there was a marked loss in audio quality due to the smaller gauge to the wires in the cable.

Working on an upgrade strategy, possibly using the high quality Canare StarQuad L-4E5C microphone cable recommended by headphone modders, if I can find an acceptable screw-adapter plug to use at the end. Those are not easy to find. Any ideas? The alternative is just to chop down the original cable to a decent length (2.5m or so) and use that.

After spending the day with it, the sound ain't so bad. I was testing it off a new phone and without the headphone amp. After a day of listening (and noting the teeny-tiny wires connecting the drivers to the crossover), it's pretty good.

Panic over. The upgrade can wait.

I use the AKG K181 headphones. The leads on these are detachable on a mini xlr, & you can order replacement cable's as either straight or coiled & with the normal screw on mini-jack adaptor on the end.

It might be worth investigating wether AKG use a better quality cable than Sony. If they do, order a coiled AKG lead & use that.

....alternatively see if you could fit a mini XLR socket in the Ultrasones. Then you wouldn't have to modify the AKG lead.

That's a killer idea - I could mount the socket inside the phones using epoxy putty. Neutrik are famous for their XLR sockets, but they seem to have been invented by ITT. Maybe it's the "Mini XL" range?

Got the AKG K242HD phones overhere.

Sweetest I have listened to so far. Same sound and characteristics as Mackie HR-624 nearfields.

Anyone notice that the Ultrasone HFI-700 are virtually the same as SkullCandy SK Pro's (which I own). Just a thought.
