Seller has the product and software registered with NI. If he doesn't unregister the product (he is keeping the software), can I buy a new license for traktor and use the mixer with timecode?

You can buy a Software and Timecode Kit from NI that will allow you to use Traktor timecode with a Z2 that's lacking software.

Thanks for the reply. I was concerned that I would end up with a mixer that I couldn't get firmware updates, or get working properly even if I bought software
Firmware updates are freely available from the NI website - you could even download them now if you wanted.
The Z2 should be plug-and-play on any computer with Traktor Scratch 2 and Z2 drivers installed.
