IKEA Expedit is being replaced by Kallax, which has thinner sides and rounder edges. Hopefully it stays the same size (and gets cheaper).

Wow, I can't believe people put that much weight in those things... all that vinyl!
If you twist one the wrong way it just falls apart. LOL.
Really?
I have never heard of, or seen an Expedit twist or fall apart. They are perfect for storing records or using as the base for a deck stand.
They aren't as flimsy as other Ikea units. The 'Billy' falls apart if you shout it but the Expedit is sturdy.
I know loads of people that use them and they have stood the test of time.
The replacement must be similar dimensions. There's no way Ikea aren't aware that people are using them for record storage even if it does account for a small amount of their Expedit sales.
Expect eBay prices to rocket when they are no longer available from Ikea stores.
I know because I threw one out, and it twists up pretty easy. If you mount it to the wall to keep it square, it'll stay pretty rigid.
It's just made out of laminate over a cardboard honeycomb... structurally quite sound for force in some directions, but not others.
Karlos, If you follow the link posted by the OP there is another link to the facebook account from Germany with everyone protesting Ikea discontinuing the series. There are a bunch of user submitted photos of Expedit book shelfs that are twisted up and broke....
Yeah like I say, YMMV.
I haven't seen one go like that but I'm sure some have.
It is Ikea after all. Their stuff is hardly comparable to some master craftsman's work.
My mate is a carpenter and he built my studio desk. It's huge (long) and built to last but he uses Expedits
that is frightening!^
