Personally, I'd only ever use powered. NOt absolutely necessary in all situations, but a decent 7 or 10 port (multi-tt hub) will have you covered.

Depends on your computer and hub and device.

I used to have a NanoKontrol, BCR2000, Hercules RMX, APC40 and USB thumb drive running simultaneously on an unpowered hub and macbook with no problems.

A Macbook can put out up to 1200ma from the first port connected if the device requests.

I purchased this Belkin hub (DUB-H7) through suggestions from friends (One of them being Mr. Paddy himself). It is a great hub, lets me use two X1's with and without power. I highly suggest this hub.

Like Patch, I wouldn't even accept the risk of gear cutting out due to lack of power. It's not that much of a hassle to use a powered one anyway.

I use a basic 4 port un-powered hub for my K2 and two X1's with no issue.

    Default powered

I would say powered especially if playing out. Make sure that the power supply that comes with the hub can supply enough current . Add up the current requirements of all devices, usually in ma, and compare to the specification of the supply provided with the hub.
