    Default Mixtapes and The LAW...

are there any loopholes to this? What are the chances of getting in trouble with the law, if you create a mixtape/dj set, distribute it to a few local 'mom&pop' shops in your city?

Slapping the "for promotional use only" sticker on the CD be enough?

Like white label records, i'm fairly certain these are seen as a necessary evil in the industry.
Just dont sell them and your fine.

Technically it is copywrite infrigment, but as long as you give them away, you can usually get away with it. Dance artists etc don't get as much promo as pop artists, so if people hear a set and like a song they will usually go out and buy it, which helps the artist make more money - hence why livesets.com isn't getting harrased like all the bitorrent sites.
    Current Top 3:
    1. Loco Dice - Seeing through Shadows
    2. Light Year - Sex Education
    3. Simian Mobile Disco - Cruel Intentions (DJ Pierre Remix)

I don't think you'd get in any trouble as long as it's kept underground and you're not making any real money.

They care when you're selling them, and when it's all ASCAP stuff too... the indie labels know it's necessary. Hell, they might promo if you tell the ones you have worked with
