Use an iPod already connected to one of the mixer's channels.

The night that I spin at has CD decks all the other DJs use so I just bring a small case of CDs and cue one up when I start.

But I've been debating on putting together a larger rig (CD decks, turntables and VCI-100) so I think a pair of simple CD decks should do the trick. The CDJ-400's might be a bit much just for a backup. But maybe a simple integrated mixer/CD decks could work, or the iPod idea. Keep in mind you don't want to have a better backup than your main option.

You could use something that also doubles as another midi control.... if such a thing exists, anyone know ?

That would justify the purchase of a decent cd deck

Well, the CDJ-400 doubles as a MIDI controller. And you get a mixer that doubles a MIDI controller and you have an all-in-one for around $2500... hm...

If you are not playing in a club, take an iPod with you, if you're playing in a club, learn how to mix on cd players and burn a couple of CD's....

I myself am playing out using a laptop and the VCI-100 and a Trigger Finger hooked to Ableton Live and/or Dekadance.

However in the event I have a mass failure I do have a hard-drive with all my projects backed up and music set up to play in any digital set-up (ie... FS, Mix Vibes, Torq, Serato etc...) when available. As well I have a handsome selection of music on CD's ready to go.

The funny thing I find lately is when I am out (Generally warehouse parties) I see fewer and fewer vinyl DJs. The last show I was at there was only one. They had to scramble due to a lack of preparation to get a set of turntables and a mixer in order for him to play.

The best advice is when traveling to a venue. Investigate before hand what will be generally available.

    or you could just sing
