"Raymond Chandler has no technique and is fresh out of ideas"

Teehee.
Technique is not the point you say? Well then I guess I'll just rock iTunes at the next party I play at. I'm sure everyone will love that

Touche!
However if you were in a booth and nobody could see that you were using Itunes eliminating the punter to promoter expectation that a DJ uses gear too complicated for mortals to understand do you really think that it would be impossible to rock the floor?
Are we 'really' gonna go over this again.
Its all horses for courses.
If the music you are playing requires a lot of technique and or technology then you need it for the crowd to appreciate it to its full extent.
If you are playing a floor that doesnt require complex mixing techniques then you will get away with iTunes or whatever.
This is one of those non-discussions. Its a false opposition.
Technique will never replace music choice.
But if your music choice requires technique, said music will not sound as it should without technique.
QBerts fame is down to technique, the music choice is secondary but incredibly important all the same. The balance is more towards technique.
Richard Norris (Beyond The Wizards Sleeve) technique isnt that great, his mixes arent always that good (in fact the track often runs out before hes cued the next one cus hes dancing around) but his music choice is sublime beyond words. The balance is more towards music choice.
There is no correct answer to this question. Its a non-question.
Its like asking "whats more wet Pepsi or Coke"

"Hello my name is Im Raymond Chandler"

I think the point of the quote isn't that technique doesn't matter. It's that when all you are concerned with is technique you have lost the dream. When applied to DJing, when all you are concerned with is new toys and new tricks you've lost what we are really here (too much caffeine, originally typed that as "hear"... wtf?) for, what really drew us here.
The music.
Technique comes along with practice... Practicing is just too much fun....
Have fun änd you'll get some technique.
Music is central
Music is communication, as any other form of creation.

the problem with quotes like that are... generally people who "get it" don't get there from reading quotes and have some eureka moment because of what some self-righteous wanker professed as gospel... and the people who don't "get it" never will, even after reading such quotes.
