If you're a logic user, I'd suggest experimenting with the ES M. It's a very nice-sounding and easy to use monophonic synth. I've gotten very nice and fat basslines with it, even with the resonance turned up.
If you want a good third-party option, try Carbon 2. You can make some fairly complex and weird sounds with it. It comes with a free download of Reaktor Player
any virtual analog synth should work, logic's synths, abletons synths, massive, sylenth even free ones like synth 1 (windows only)
Anything with a cutoff knob!

poizone works simple and effective, don't be put of by the EDM crap that they show in the tutorials though!
