Looking through the XP tweaks article, they all appear pretty benign. ...save for my curiosity with your management of DMA. What issue were you encountering with it?

Of note, this is the only item you modified inside the device manager, which was the crux of my issue with audio streamlining. To clarify, my recommendation was not to use the device manager specifically as it's a poor interface for getting results from the OS.

Keeping in mind the age of these tweaks, user's drives weren't always configured to take advantage of DMA (even though capable of that mode of operation), instead running in PIO. Running a drive in DMA could allow enough additional throughput to address underruns.

There are lots of reasons why it's better to go through the DM than targeting specific services. A great example is with WiFi adapters. Lots of windows users need to turn off WiFi when performing, but don't know the handful of services associated with it. It's much easier to just right click and disable the adapter in DM than pulling up services and trying to kill them all. It's also easier to reverse.

Speaking of services - I've just disabled some in Win 8.1.

Anyone know of any less well described services that I can also stop?

I'd disable wifi through the network connections control panel, services go with it.

HP though, what the hell are you doing trying to get a top end RIG out of an HP ... so many better alternatives out there.

I havn't made the upgrade to 8 though nor do I ever plan on it. I am still windows vista actually, lol.

The brand of PC is largely irrelevant as long as the hardware allows the installing of OEM drivers. I wouldnt buy a HP, but once you nuke and rebuild it, they can run fine.

You really dont need to do this on a modern laptop. Theres no benefit to optimising services any more unless you are actually having real time interrupts.

I actually did start going through BV's recommendations (I've been doing that since XP - he is the man!).

But I stopped after a while, since most of the items on his list (the ones I checked, anyway) aren't changed from the default.

I did some latency checks last night using LatencyMON and the new Advanced LatencyMON. Got some pretty nice results! All 8 CPU's running with < 5µs of latency!!! (And ZERO hard pagefaults!)

Now, to satisfy my own OCD, I just need to figure out how to completely remove/uninstall (WITHOUT using the GPO - it's not available on Win 8.1 Core):

    Win Store
    Calculator
    Alarms
    Camera
    (Sound Recorder?)
