General test I did on a Dell XPS15 about 6-months ago.
Control was rendering an architectural scene in Autodesk 3DS Max over a 1-hour period. Laptop was plugged in and sitting in a room that was 78-degrees. Surface temperature taken at palmrest. Laptop was shut down and cooled to room temperature between tests.
Wattage measured with a Extech EX330 Multimeter.
Internal heat measured with Piriform Speccy.
External heat measured with Maytech Infrared Thermometer.
Laptop Open (normal):
- Wattage: 78w
- Internal: 117-degrees
- External: 86-degrees
Laptop Almost Closed to 1-inch (Screen on):
- Wattage: 78w
- Internal: 132-degrees
- External: 96-degrees
Laptop Closed (Screen off)
- Wattage: 49w
- Internal: 112-degrees
- External: 84-degrees
YMMV, but I'm confident the stress I put on this machine is significantly higher than when I spin.
