use audacity...

you could use iTunes as well, just make sure that you bump up the quality from the default settings
There's also a Free Open Source package for Windows called CDEX that does a nice job of mass conversion.
iTunes is easy... i have mine set to AIFF by default so always need to rememebr to change it back after
Or I use Adobe Audition which I have for work anyway

In the Library, right click on the song & select "Create * Version"
