If the power of great music transcends the visual, then what is the purpose of a mask? Surely at that point you just look a bit stupid.
If the power of great music transcends the visual, why would you care about what performers are wearing? Do you find the mask takes away from your enjoyment of the music?

Not just saying that to be a smartass - genuinely wondering.

I can't think of any of the DJs I listen to use masks.

I cut daft punk and dead mouse 5 slack because they are original ideas.

I don't hate the masks. I just think they are gimmicky. I am there to dance and listen to good tunes mixed by a good DJ. This whole movement that house music is festival music is a bit strange to me. I think it's that attitude that has given birth to alot more people using masks to differentiate themselves from other acts.

I agree that a lot of mask-wearing is gimmicky. There's one producer - Anonym - who covers his face. I really dig his music. Redshape and SBTRKT are pretty good too, I would say.

I enjoyed this article on the subject:

    http://djmag.com/content/face-djs-masks

“Whenever I put on the mask, most of the people in a club or at a festival like it a lot, and lots of them cheer, take pictures and videos. Of course, there's always somebody who thinks that's silly, but I never had a really bad reaction from somebody in the audience. The worst thing that happened was when somebody tried to steal the mask. That already happened twice, but fortunately they couldn't manage to get the mask out of the club.”

    From the article:

In 2009, DJ Bl3nd was catapulted into the public eye with his Club Mix YouTube video where he donned his signature mask. The video racked up over 80 million hits.

No, DJ Bl3nd got a bunch of bots to spike his YouTube views.

As for masks, the only people who ever got them right were Detroit artists who wore bandanas and balaclavas because they really did want to hide their identities to keep themselves and the music out of the mainstream.
