will be going from my laptop > mixer > active speakers.
I guess the usb port is for my laptop and the balanced XLR are for my speakers.

im guessing its a active mixer? im a total noob with mixers this is my first one lol.. been reading mixed reviews about connecting active speakers to active mixers, want to make sure that mixer is fine to use before I buy and damage something lol.

That mixer will be fine. Do exactly as you said, USB to your laptop, and then an XLR cable from the mixer to each speaker.

Active mixers don't exist, a mixer is a mixer. You may find mixers that have built in amps used to run passive speakers, but these are generally used more for bands and live work. I don't think you'll find any DJ mixers that have an amp in them.
