I faced the same budget problem earlier, I chose the HDJ-500 and they were beyond my expectations. Give them a go

I recently picked up a copy a set of Marshall Major's to replace my previous set of headphones which I killed on the way to a gig. I had limited choice where I live and decided to give these a run. I rarely spend more than $125 on headphones for DJing purpose, as the lifespan for headphones when it comes to the rough and tumble of regularly playing out is invariably limited.

So far they have been fine for DJing; the sound quality is pretty decent and there were no complaints from another long-standing DJ who also used them at a recent gig when we were going back-to-back on a set.

When it comes to studio production; I am not sure I would use them as my primary cans; but they have a use as one of a number of methods of listening to a track. i.e. I use my monitors as my primary source and then listen to tracks I am working on via a couple of pairs of headphones [including iPhone ones] to see how it sounds in each one.

With $100 bucks IMHO right now you cant get better all round headphones than a set of Refurbished HD25 Amperiors - remember these were RRP $359 just prior to the new Alu HD25's being released.

And yes, they are fantastic as studio headphones and super easy to drive with low output soundcards / phones etc as well.

For DJ'ing all you need is Loud and reasonable frequency separation - nothing more, nothing less.

IMHO do not touch the Marshalls with a bargepole, I stupidly bought a pair after a short listening session after being on the lookout for something to replace my 15 year old MDR-v6's.

One day later I put back on the V6's and WHAM - it was like being transported back to heaven, no nasty midrange, no distortion, no lack of top end, and proper chunky bass end.

Basically the Marshalls sounded like crap, but it took my ears a while to adjust to the new cans.

Needless to say I sold the Marshalls the following day and ordered a brand new set of Sony 7506's (same headphone as the V6).

The Marshall Studios however do actually sound decent and built like tanks.
