What is the most reliable way to run (say) 4 USB midi controllers into a laptop with 2 USB ports?
Is it just a case of getting a <USB Cable - 4 USB Port> Adaptor?

USB Hub :)
An Express Card.
Both Express Cards and hubs have advantages and disadvantages. The main one for hubs is the questionable power supply (if you don't have seperate power cables for your usb devices) and for the express cards, well you'll need a slot for such a card so if it's already taken/you don't have a slot well.. it's over.
Hubs are fine if you make sure to get power supply cables for your equipment.
