Going modular..

Hey,

My 1210s are being packed away to make way for baby related stuff and it will be a while before I get a bigger house.. for the meantime I am looking to go modular.. a small setup that doesn't take up much room, can easily be packed away, and controllers I can use without dragging out the mixer.

I'm thinking this is a great excuse to dedicate some time to the Traktor Remix Decks.. however, i am torn what to buy, i've always stuck with NI but i'm open to suggestions.

I currently have a DN-X1600 and a Midi Fighter 3D.

One thing i'll miss is the ability to change the tempo, i'm thinking remap the F1 faders if it's possible? but then i'll need an X1 for transport controls, maybe there is an intuitive way to map the F1 to transport... it could quick become a mess again.

Am i overlooking any awesome controllers? that give me the functionality I need?

It's not something i'll be able to use much so don't want to spend a fortune on it either.

If I was in your situation, I'd keep the mixer, and add a ZOMO MC-1000.

Full 4-Deck control (sounds like one of 'em will be a Remix Deck triggered from the MF?), with a built in 8 out audio interface.

They can be bought brand new, VERY cheaply right now.

You could easily map the browse knob (shifted) to tempo control.

I currently use an DN-X1600 + 2 X1's and love the setup, you would have to control the tempo with buttons though, not sure you'd like that. Otherwise a Kontrol D2 might be an option?

I'd definitely prefer a slider for the tempo but at this point i'll just be happy to be able to continue mixing.. i do play music faster than it's regular BPM so i just need to set an initial BPM and then i'll syncing the rest as i'll be playing with remix decks and samples etc..

I think i'll stick with the Denon, midi fighter and then get an X1, maybe a F1 further down the line.

Button mapping alternative looks something like this:

Add In > Deck Common > Tempo Adjust
Type = Button
Mode = Inc/Dec

BTW, what mapping do you use for your MF3D?
Perhaps we can find some easy way to add those tempo controls somewhere over a four different virtual banks of the Midifighter.

I'm not using any mapping at the moment. I'll want something that gives me best control over the remix decks with maybe the ability to switch into an FX mode.

I have added an X1 to the setup, now maybe an F1.

I use an x1 for general controls, a midi fighter spectra for remix decks/fx, and a bringer pl1 for deck control/volume control of the remix decks.

behringer pl-1 or denon sc-2000 will give you jogwheel and tempo control for a very small amount of money. and if you want to add control over remix decks, you can always add a F1 ;)

I'm new to this mobile format, so forgive me if my link doesn't work.

It's a video of me using a bit of everything, mainly the midifighter for remix decks. Towards the end of the video, I use the top two rows of four push rotary encoders on the pl-1 as volume knobs and mute buttons for remix decks C and D, despite which deck A through D the pl-1 is set to control.
If you push and hold the following side buttons on your midi fighter in remix deck mode, you can switch from decks A-D. - Forward right, forward left, middle left. Then the four flashing buttons will appear asking you to pick a remix deck.

After that, you can mute the drums in remix deck channel C with the rotary knobs on the pl-1 while simultaneously playing the drums on the new track of channel D.

For fx, I recently got a KP3 and use it on my fx send and return on my mixer. I can switch my midifighter to midi mode and use the instant gratification fx pre fader, while simultaneously applying further analogue post fader fx with the KP3. Pretty fun and keeps you on your toes!
