If I went and paid to see a movie at the movie theater does that give me the right just keep going into the theater and watch that movie where ever I want, cause I already aid once? Do I now have the right to download a copy of it off the internet? NO! Hell I went to the bar last week and paid 25 cents to hear a song, why should I have to pay again to hear that song I already paid to listen to it, I am entitled to steal everything! All the things U just described, going to SEE A MOVIE, GOING TO DISNEY LAND, are all things u pay to GO AND DO!!!!!!!! If i buy a DVD that gives me the right to either rip it or if its easier i can just DL it from pirates bay. None the less i bought it! i own it! can do with it as i see fit! when i buy a record or an mp3 im not buying a one time experience. However if i lose my copy of windows XP or OS x but sill have my KEY I can go and download a new copy of windows or OSx from either TPB or MS type in my key and im ready to go. U need to stop compairing ur product to that of one time experience products.

and for the record I DONT DL pirated music, i do however support the new technology and ideas such as torrents which are graet for sharing linux distros, drivers, firmwares, and copys of say John dig weeds weekly radio show and any other number of podcasts that choose to go with torrents as a form of distro.

And for the record its not pirating music that is causing the industry to suffer, its 2 fold: 1, CRAP MUSIC, not so much EDM but just about everything else out there is dog crap. and 2, dinosaur record labels that refuse to get with the times, its 2010 for godsakes, napster was 10 years ago. Its just like movie industry going on and on about piracy is killing the movie busines when no its ur CRAPPY remakes and countless sequals that are making people want to stay home and just dl it from netflix.

I never once mentioned anything about blog sites. infact i rarly even read blogs with the exception of this site and pocket 5's. but i gusse i must have said somthing will i was tripping out about unicorns, ogres, and wizards with sleeves as the wide as the eye can see.

I don't support downloading an album just cause u don't want to pay for it but if u own it already and just want it in a digital form then whatever means u go through to achieve aforementioned goal is up to u. I dont see it as stealing but again i don't own a label and if i did im sure i would want to get paid as many times as i could.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you on this one.
First off, downloading an MP3 or anything digital really can't be considered "stealing". Illegal, wrong, etc.... sure, but it's not stealing.
When I steal something, it means the owner no longer has it. If I steal a CD or a couch from someone, it means that person no longer has a couch or CD to use. I've taken something away from that person.
But when I download anything digitally (intangible media), I'm not excluding anyone else from having access to it. Nothing happens to the file.
This is part of the reason that the lawsuits involving Kazaa and all had to change their lingo from "stealing" to "illegally downloading".

I also would have to disagree here. Saying that one end of an argument is invalid because it's justifying illegal activities is just blatantly wrong. Smoking weed is illegal. Driving 66mph on a 65mph zone is illegal. All of Wikileaks' activity is illegal. If the government tells me I can't look at the leaked documents because it's illegal, I am breaking the law. That aside, I still buy all of my music. While I disagree with the industry as a whole (paying $2.49 for an MP3?!), I'd still rather get some money to the artist. However if I own a physical copy of the music, I do not repurchase an MP3 album (although I have bought an MP3 album and later bought it on vinyl). A lot of labels include a free CD or download key with new releases now anyways.

I think it's just pretty dumb to expect fans to pay for an MP3 if they've bought the vinyl. If you buy a CD, you can burn it to your PC. So you're telling Vinyl fans that to have both, they should buy both? Ehh that just isn't going to work.

This whole argument brings up a ton of gray area.

Personally, I'm under the belief if you owned something in the past (a record or cd) that potentially got scratched/broken/lost, then you shouldn't feel guilt at downloading it again "illegally" to get a legitimate copy back.

That being said, the tables turn when someone downloads something for free that they haven't owned at all in the past. That, I consider stealing. Whereas the above example, I consider recovery.

It's semantics at it's best, a funny line to walk. Everyone has their own opinions on it, and people ARE NOT going to agree.

What it can come down to though, is just be prepared to pay any consequences for your actions. If it's illegal, even if you feel justified in doing it, you better own up to it if someone calls you out on it. Be it a lawsuit, or just your buddy giving you a hard time. I think that's the thing that people bother me the most with all this bullshit.

Just do WHATEVER you want to do in life, but be prepared to pay the consequences for it. Be it working a good job so you have a steady paycheck, or downloading music illegally. Just own up to it. If it's what you want to do, you're going to do it.

Hell, I smoke the reefer, and that's technically illegal. Have I been caught? No. If I was caught, would I own up to it? Yes. It's little different with downloading music, except it's a hell of a lot easier not to be caught.

would you stop making this argument already? people ripping an mp3 *IS NOT* the same as walking into a store and taking something.

it *IS NOT* the same as using services and goods from a place like disney world, the movie theatre, a bar jukebox. IT IS NOT. must i break it down for you? obviously.

the things you're relating music piracy to USE RESOURCES, take capital/actual inventory/time&money from the company:

at the movie theatre, you occupy a seat that could be used for a paying customer if you sneak in.

for a jukebox, you'd be utilizing extra electricity (negligible, but i'll give it you) and the time it takes for the song to play (which could be used for other songs to play from paying patrons).

for disney world.. their service is the unique atmosphere they offer, so yeah sneaking in would be wrong.

now, downloading a song *you already own* for free:

1. *DOES NOT* remove any "stock" from the shelves, therefore it does not hinder the ability for others to obtain it

2. *DOES NOT* decrease the potential customer base, as the person obtaining the file already has a copy of it. THERE IS NO OVERHEAD in creating a digital copy of a song. it's not like they're out big bucks if they don't move 1000 mp3's. get real.

4. *DOES NOT* mean they support piracy. They could obtain this file from other networks outside the huge p2p ones. which means..

3. *IS EXACTLY THE SAME* as if they ripped it from their vinyl/CD. E.X.A.C.T.L.Y. instead of ripping it, they went and got a digital copy. the end result? a digital version of a song on their hard drive. it was going to happen either way.

i think it's the old school heads who are getting so worked up over this, they don't seem to have a full grasp on how the internet works.

yes i've bought many vinyls that offer a digital download copy.

now WHY would record companies do this if it were wrong? the labels stand with us on this one. they think if you own a vinyl, you can own a digital copy as well. FOR FREE.
