The thing is that it takes a lot less time to argue about gear than to argue about art, especially when you're arguing about someone else's expression. If someone posts a mix, then a lot of people have to spend probably an hour or so each listening to it and thinking about it…making notes…possibly listen again. It takes a lot of man-hours to evaluate art, especially when just experiencing the art takes each person an hour.

Gear pictures, complaints, arguments, and evaluations are short. They're often heated, but it's just so much simpler. That's why there are so many more gear forums about art than there are forums devoted to actually critiquing people's art.

DJing is not the only art form that does it, not by a long shot…the number of gear sluts posting online about guitars, recording gear, photography, or basically anything else is staggering. Just look at Flickr…you'll see thousands of people debating the merits of some weird-ass lens or a post-processing technique that amounts to a couple of clicks in photoshop…it takes days to find a legit discussion of the artistic merits of a photo, and it takes seconds or maybe minutes to evaluate a photo enough to at least comment on it.

That's why we talk about gear.

That's a smiley attached to one of the other forums I frequent (abletonlivedj.com), and I really like it. But mostly it just shuts down trolls. I remember receiving one mix in almost seven years of frequenting dj forums in an attempt to settle an argument.

He was right. Absolutely. I was wrong in that argument. And the mix showed it very well, even though it took two listens to an hour-long mix for me to get it.

But it's still only happened once in seven years.

Yeah I'm just trying to gently wind xone up... purely cause

1) He started a thread asking people to convince him not to buy something

2) He buys the thing he's asked us to convince him not to buy

3) It's faulty

If that was one of my mates he would never hear the end of it :D

If it didn't cost over $2000 I would be giving him hell to. :)

the db4 auto bpm detect blows me away- the first reliable bpm counter on a mixer I have encountered. It's cool to just cut seamless autoloops playing vinyl with a button push. and it's not certified...

haha, it's cool I am very happy with the outcome of this regardless of the bumps in the road, hopefully the new unit is fine and will be here shortly.

Just got mine and Xone was spot on regarding the FX. F'ing amazing! I got lost in the verb and delay alone. They way many of the MOD and RES FX are implemented is just beautiful. I don't really know how to express how great they sound.
The only gripe I have is the left-hand FREQ knob is a tad stubborn. Also the BPM counter get's a little messed up on swings and running a loop on Burnski, Robert James - Perception caused a transient to peak through a bit.
Xone, I hope you can get your replacement soon. I understand why you hated to part with it even though it was "broken".

BTW, I prefer ISO to EQ, so smooth.

Check out the Fundamental affect, I think it's a subharmonic bass synthesizer and adds a level of bass one octave below what's playing. Sounds great on subs I can only imagine what it would do live.

Until you hear these effects words can't describe them- they are true pro studio effects.

Traktor's effects are good but they are nothing like this and if you hear them you know they are traktor efx. With the db4 reverbs it doesn't sound like an effect it sounds like you are actually in the environment the reverb is emulating.

try the next door effect on some good monitors/sub and bring it from all wet to dry and see what I mean.

Next door was the first FX I got going on from your earlier post. And yeah it's Fing gorgeous. Sadly I can't play through my monitors until the weekend. My new place is an acoustic nightmare and I need to install some heavy cloth on my walls...and add some carpet. But this is such a clean sounding piece of gear. I'm going to need a few weeks just to get muscle memory down.

Yeah, same here. I don't want the thing because I don't need it and, well…if I want to use studio-grade effects, I'll just route everything through Logic or Ableton and use actual studio effects. (actually, that might be why I don't use Traktor's effects…I got used to Ableton Live and everything else sounds shoddy except the one delay that I don't really need)

But it sucks to get something like that that's DOA. The first 1200 I bought off ebay had a broken baseplate so that it wouldn't take 2 of its feet. I returned it and eventually wound up buying from a local for a better price anyway, but I was heartbroken for days. And that was only $250.

I guess he can console himself with his other gear, though…I think I remember a setup picture involving an S4. It's not a xone by any stretch of the imagination, but it's not a POS either. And worst case, he could map his Maschine to control the mixer. Again…it's a horrible idea, but at least he can still mix.
