That's harsh. I can understand when someone goes mainstream and makes a lot of money doing something. I friend of mine has a rock band and they are signed by universal motown. They use to almost always do covers of hit songs as well. Even after they were signed. But then it seemed to stop. Don't know the reasons though. I could assume maybe the issues we discuss right now.

When you play covers live, you are supposed to pay royalties to the owners of the lyrics and composition.

I'd say Universal Motown either didn't know in the beginning, then found out and asked them to stop - or they (Universal Motown) were sick of paying royalties.

But it could just be the band have enough original material now to fill their sets out and dont need to play covers.
