I might have to give in and buy a USB 2.0 card, the virus is performing much better on the other ports but it is still running through a mobo hub and it is sometimes giving me error messages.
Might have to grab one of these

Out of curiosity, what do you have in your PCIe slots and are they working properly? Is it just video, FW, and USB?

My video card works properly as expected- I think I mentioned before but only 1 DVI port works with full graphics enabler settings but that is to be expected for most if not all cards I believe- I'm running multiple monitors through an active displayport to dvi adapter. HDMI should work too but I haven't bothered checking it.
So I went out and bought a 3TB hard drive (bought a seagate 3tb external and gutted it for the 7200rpm sata3 internal, cheaper than buying a bare drive), to put in the hackintosh.
I got it to copy a bunch of media from a couple 1.5tb drives I had in my PC desktop- so just my luck the 1.5tb drives were all running perfectly fine for years and as I put them in the hackintosh to copy my data over one of the 1.5tb starts getting the click of death and then erroring out. Of all times for it to fail it's the moment I am copying over all the data. Right now it is in my freezer- hopefully the freezer trick works long enough so I can get all my data off. I vaguely remember this drive having an issue before then it was fine for almost a year.
Nice machine, well done! It's so much easier to do it these days. My first one (pre-Intel) was an odyssey, two of my four current ones were also very challenging. Ironically, the easiest one was the netbook (runs snow leopard very well).
It's all about picking the right hardware, mostly the board and the graphics card (acceleration not working was a common problem). Sleep can be a challenge, most wireless chips won't work, but nowadays, that's about it.
Best cases for me are made by Antec.
edit: good luck with your HDD. Freezer is your last resort. Use hdd regenerator and then getdataback, burn a hiren's boot cd.
I haven't read all the posts here, but here are my 2 cents.
I've build many hackintoshes for me and my friends for different purposes. Audio production, media center, video production, etc. I produced the sound and music of a TV show with one of my first hackintoshes and some Logic projects had like 100 tracks. Never let me down.
I've always used Kakewalk and always got a happy ending.

I realize this old "rule" has probably lead to me destroying several perfectly good hard drives, but I've never lost data permanently. For me "drive crash" usually means a couple days of reinstalling audio software because it's always worth taking the opportunity to start clean.

is the GA-Z77-DS3H still the best option for ivybridge hackintosh motherboards at the moment? I want a cheap and painless option!
