But, uhh…IMHO, if a hard drive ever gives noticeable problems, it's life is over.
Unplug it and assume that you'll get 1 more read out of it if you're lucky. Go buy another one.
I realize this old "rule" has probably lead to me destroying several perfectly good hard drives, but I've never lost data permanently. For me "drive crash" usually means a couple days of reinstalling audio software because it's always worth taking the opportunity to start clean.
