alright, for jazz lately i've been really feeling more of the earlier songs that have that swinging vibe. hadn't really payed too close attention to more of the origins until i heard some re-interpretations of that era from groups like beats antique, chinese man, and scratch bandits crew. these are gonna be pretty obvious and i'm not going to claim that i'm some kind of deep jazz digger, but i've run into my share of stuff that i love. i can't remember some of the names either so i'll just give a few that i can think of currently. also, there is a lot of experimental jazz i can appreciate but i'm almost never in the mood for it since it is a very complicated beast. i'm generally all about the groove so i tend to gravitate towards that, however i do find time to get lost in a world i don't understand very well, which can be a very moving experience if you are open to it.

just look at duke ellington's face when he starts to play the piano. it's such and infectious type of music that i can't help but bounce to. everyone looks happy in that moment they get to play and you can surely hear coming through. this is definitely what i would call accessible music. music that gets you feelin' that groove.

medeski, martin and wood! this is one of my favorite tracks from them. i love the way it opens with the bass, it's got that nice break beat drumming going on, and that funky organ just kills it for me.

T.R.A.M. is more of a hybrid of prog rock and jazz containing members from animals as leaders and the mars volta. this song is so brilliant to me. those runs and chords sound so good, i love the guitar chords at the 2:20 mark and then the guitar and vocals during the breakdown at ~2:30 is amazing!
i'll ask my friend for some recommendations as well since he's a huge jazz guy and i've really dug some of the stuff he's played for me but my memory fails me right now.

I'm right there with ya. 33.5.
Well if it makes any difference, it's the pretentious trash-talking that bothers me the most. I know I might sound like a hypocrite as I'm one of the biggest contributors to the "I hate Paris Hilton as a DJ" threads, but it's more the talk about how someone can't stand XYZ DJ anymore because he/she used to be cool, but isn't anymore because they said so kind of talk that really annoys me.
Sometimes you just have to laugh at the world. Do what you want to do and stick to your guns. I'm not as deep in the scene anymore, but most of the time I'm too tired, or can't be bothered with all the drunk people and the loud music and expensive drinks. That doesn't mean I don't still rock out to a bumping house set in my car, or go to the occasional jam thrown by my favorite promotions company of all time, I just appreciate the music in different ways and in different places.
As for the DJ scene, it's unfortunate, and pretentious. I just try to poke fun at that too. I've recently become a foodie and I go on a lot of food blogs and it's the same thing "Such and such place used to be cool before XYZ chef left, now it's overrated". It's made me realize that I've turned into a Yuppie. It's unfortunate, but most of the time i just make fun about what a pretentious yuppie I've become, because I guess I have the same opinions about different things.

Can't read the article because my hand refuses to click on a webpage called mrpaparazzi.com... not that I'm interested anyway.
