Might as well cop a pio 2000 setup since you've got the cash. Probably the best option for future club gigs and they'll hold their value for fuckin ages incase you end up going on a bender for a month or so and need to recoup..

Macbooks are superior for DJing. Bottom line. You could even buy a used or refurbed one from Apple and be set. Only use it to DJ with.
You don't NEED CDJ's but they are what you will find mostly in clubs. What music do you play? For club gigs you can always play on 1 or 2 X1's and a the house mixer, which most of the time is a DJM-800.
The S4 is a great all around solution. If that's the style you like to play on i'd get:
MACBOOK
S4
X1
a 4 channel mixer, DJM-800 if i had the cash.
Audio 8 DJ. Thing is if you get this and don't get TSP you won't have Timecode control over CDJ's. But if your gonna use controllers then who cares. Just rock your X1, or two if that's what you like. I think the X1 works great with the S4 software as well.
So you have a portable set up your S4, and an ultra portable set up your X1......and a 4 channel mixer to practice on.
Also you won't break the bank with the above set ups either.
I am an MCSE and have worked ONLY on Windows for 10 years.
Got a Mac 2 years ago....and I also thought it would be HECTIC....but it wasn't!
It was actually EASY....the OS is smaller than Windows...in terms of where everything is etc.
My point was portablilty. You said a PC....so i took it as desktop PC.
But if its the alienware lappy....then all good!
:)
a small fortune and you want a windows machine for DJin? mad.
Get a mac, an xone 92, a motu ultralite audio interface, two X1s, a maschine, and if your feelin like king ding get two cdj 2000s.
Then top it off with Traktor Pro and ableton live 8.
[quote=DeusExMachina;196047]I am worried a bit about this, as I have never mixed [or even attempted] with turntables or CDJs [which would be I good case in picking some up I guess] so with that said maybe I should get with the club standard.
Edit: yeah same thought you meant an alienware desktop labtops good :P just dont forget the djtt stickers and the free NI ones :P must have
Laptop: Yeah I was informed Alienware laps can hold their own like a MAC laptop can with the right stuff inside. I talked with support to customize mine how I wanted to be able to DJ with portability. Was reassured that I should have no problems. But I was heavily looking into a Mac as I do hear great things about them in regards to DJing, only thing is with a PC I can transfer all of my music production programs [Ableton 8, Traktor, and other files] to and fro, with a Mac not so much without getting all of the necessary MAC files.
I usually spin progressive house, Top 40, etc. big into effects and such.
I was thinking of getting CDJs before this [just to practice with as I did see them being used at clubs] but had a question; Do you need CDs to play with them, or can you use your mp3s as well? Or both?
How much cash is a buttload as I really don't think I could fit a huge amount in my butt? Not enough for a mental setup anyway.
I can generally say +1 to all of this, but...
To add to the Alienware lappy story:
A year ago, a guy I know bought an Alienware laptop. He had nothing but shit with it! (He also has an extensive windows background)
Constant shit with it. After a while He saw how easy and stable a macbook pro was, he decided to go for a mac book pro too.
He has never been more satisfied with a laptop!
To make a long story short:
Mac has more extensive support for MIDI. MIDI over LAN etc is native.
For windows you have to dosh out for exotic applications, which have a tendency to crash.... a lot...
Especially if money is not an object, go for a MacBook Pro.
For controller or regular setup, sit and think.
Think and rethink how you want to spin tunes.
True vinyl has the more satisfying feel to beatmatching. (Yeah I still <3 my vinyl roots!)
But, DJing has progressed... a lot....
You might want to consider MIDIcontrollers. (See the bridge I made here...? MIDI. ;) )
It goes without saying that the Native Instruments Kontrol S4 is the controller to beat at the moment.
It was built to resemble the Traktor Pro S4 GUI, and does a damn fine job I might add!
However, the way you need to work the controller could not be yours.
Maybe the Native Instruments Kontrol X-1 is more compatible with your DJ workflow or idea, or maybe even the Allen & Heath Xone:1/2/3/4D is more of a match with your idea of DJing.
Think if you want to go all out, beatmatch or sync DJ.
Next try to draw/ make a sketch.
Match this sketch to what's already on the market.
Just to make a crazy example, for me it came to the following:
- 1x MacBookPro 15,4" Core2Duo 2.66Ghz, 4Gb RAM, 320 Gb HDD
- 1x Traktor Pro (I came from Traktor DJ Studio)
- 1x Behringer BCR2000,
- 1x MIDIfighter,
- 1x Native Instruments Audio4DJ,
- 1x Reloop RMX-30 Blackfire Edition.
If money was not an option, I would most probably sell the Audio4DJ and Reloop RMX-30 Blackfire Edition.
Not that these two are bad components in my set up, quite the opposite tbh, but I would want a Allen & Heath Xone: DB4.
(Mixer with built in soundcard)
I have had the opportunity to dabble with the DJM-2000, but this was just way too much for me.
This is just to show how far your setup _can_ go, please consider every purchase.
It's cool you have a big load of money, but you can only spend it once! ;)
Thanks Tekki and everyone for the insights. After doing a bit more research with everyone's suggestions [thanks guys, exactly what i wanted to hear] my current list looks something like this:
S4 : I love Traktor and my VCI-100s right now. I think after all is said and done I'd be spending most of my time with these
Mac Book Pro: Yes I do love my PC, but I will probably get one of these just for Mixing and Djing
Midi Fighter: Wanted on for a long time, just will be cool thing to have + probably works wonders with great cue juggling as well, which is what I want to really define my music with
2x CDJ 2000s: after watching a few videos and reading about their features, I am quite sold. Bonus is that they will help with in house club style tables I reckon
DJM 2000: I am not sure about this one as I have been research some Allen and Heaths, but I am thinking of just stick with an all Pioneer setup, plus the built in Touch features seem very neat
Crane Stand: Self explanatory. Also seems to get the best reviews.
Flight Case: Will be based on what I eventually buy.
Sound, what kind of speakers will you get? Might as well get something that can handle parties now with stands, maybe a sub and all the cables you need. I think the 2000 will be a waste of money. You would need to spend some serious time on it to get comfortable with it, plus I seriously doubt many clubs will have that as a house mixer for at least a good while. If you really want an analogue mixer the DJM800 is what's standard so get that. Spend the money you saved by not getting the 2000 and start your own club night. That way you can kind of guarantee a spot to play.
